#CharityTuesday

My apologies I have left blogging very very late it's been two weeks since the Glitz and Glam Raffle and 11 days since The Ball.

I have no idea where the last 2 weeks have gone after a good 9 months of planning it's all over in the blink of an eye.

We had some superb prizes for the raffle and after selling approximately 3500 of the 400 I ordered it took nearly 5 hours to fold them all !!!

A list of our prize winners can be found here

A massive Thank You to everyone who donated a prize there were some absolutely amazing prizes.

So to The Ball at 9am on a very very cold and icy Friday morning we headed off to Tankersley Manor for the big day.

20 tables to be set up and 200 chairs to be covered, gift bags to be distributed and balloons to be blown up and dressed it wasn't going to be a small task but as usual Glamoupuss Weddings pulled it off bringing a few of their own helpers.  We did it and the room looked absolutely beautiful.

Our theme was Vegas so we went with Red, Black and White as our colour scheme which was perfectly executed with black chair covers, red sashes, black and silver chargers, beautiful chandelier centrepieces and stunning feather centrepieces, The pictures I have of the room are very amateur but I'm hoping that KTMace Photography got some great shots and I'm looking forward to seeing them.

The Table stationary was provided by Helen Reed who did a brilliant job Thank you Helen.
I was ready and the guests started to arrive, greeted by our beautiful Vegas Showgirls ...

And so the night began guests took their seats and as usual Tankersley performed (with maybe a minor hiccup) the staff were professional and Kay our events supervisor made sure everything ran on time with very little intervention on my part.  The Crooner (Tony Martin) http://www.thecrooner.co.uk/ did a fabulous job as did our little Twinkle Toes Emile Ruddock.

The Auction compared by my fabulously 'shy' brother which made us £1610

During the night guests were entertained by Harry Robson The Magician we had hired for the evening, I have to say he was brilliant and during the night there was lots of cheers and whoops from guests who were wowed by his magical abilities.

Guests also had the opportunity to purchase Alexanders Dollars to use in the Casino which was to open after the nights entertainment.  The casino was hugely popular I've never seen a room clear so quick after the announcement to say it was open and I know there were a few disappointed guests who didn't get to spend as much time as they would have liked at the tables, I'm sorry if this was the case I wish I could have afforded to hire more tables.  Thank you to Caroline Dawson at FunCasinos.net

We were lucky to have 2 photographers on the night with formal poses by Dean Williams at PhotoBusiness.co.uk and my fabulous Friend Katie Cartwright at KTMace Photography who I kept seeing during the night with her camera.  Katie was taking more informal shots on the night I know they will be brilliant and will add a link as soon as I have one.

My husband Ian showing my son Jack his new found Magic skills !!!!

The Lovely Karen and Sam from Glamourpuss Weddings with their Husbands
My limelight stealing husband at the nights end with the Casino Balloons !

A very nervous me during my speech !!!

So to our Grand Total up to and including the night we raised £10987 which is a tremendous amount so THANK YOU everyone who helped us to achieve this total I know the Charity will be very very happy to receive a cheque for such an amazing amount.  I'm hoping to request that the money be used specifically for research into Cot Death and maybe helping families in Yorkshire deal with the loss of their baby.  This money is Alexander's legacy, this is how we remember him and I cannot put into words how much everyones generosity means to me.

Ian works for HSBC Bank as does My Brother in Law Andrew and Sister in Law Jenny they do Pound for Pound for Charity Fundraising up to £500 per employee so that adds another £1500 to the total raised giving a Complete Total of £12487

All that is left to say is Thank You once again to our supporters and sponsors here's to 2013 !!!

One Month To Go !!!

Plans are going great guns with Raffle prizes steadily arriving and tickets flying out the door ...Thankfully!!!

A Huge Big Thank You from me if you have bought some and offered to sell some for me

Now some well deserved Thanks to some of the people that have made Alexander's Charity Ball as big as it is.  The planning and organising of such an event is no easy task but it is made easier knowing I have the support of lots of friends and family and when the purse strings are being stretched very tight I have our regular donators to whom I go.

Such friends as Dave and Toni Cross.

David is the one of the founders and directors of Coda Studios a very prominent Architecture Practice based in Sheffield.  Since the death of our precious boy Dave and Toni, through Coda, have fund raised for The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (in memory of Alexander) endless amounts of times, gathering sponsorship for our Mile in Memories, selling raffle tickets to staff and clients and asking around for us for raffle prizes, well Toni does !!!

As well as all that effort Coda sponsors Alexander's Charity Ball and 2012 is no different.

Thanks to Coda's generous donation we will have a 'Fun Casino' at this years Vegas Themed Ball.  Provided by Fun Casinos guests will buy Fun Money to exchange for chips at the Roulette or Blackjack tables, all the money raised on the night we keep to add to the total raised.

I will never have the words to tell them both how much their support means to both Ian and myself and Thank You never seems quite enough
Have an amazing time this year I owe you both so much x

Happy New Year Everyone

So with 6 weeks to go Ball Central is up and running with a vengeance, the to do list is growing by the minute and I still have 2000 raffle tickets to sell #panic

Things are coming together nicely however and the night should blow the socks off my guests.

Raffle Tickets are available at £1.00 each, in a book of 10 so please if you can help me out by purchasing a few I'd been eternally grateful.  A list of prizes is available on our website AlexandersCharityBall.co.uk or on our Facebook page Facebook Alexanders Charity Ball

Finally for now ;

2011 was a year full of highs and lows, the lowest being the death of my Nan in April.  My Dad however gave me some pictures of the twins at my Nan's house that I have never seen before, they must have been taken on her camera so have only just come to light.  They are lovely and capture both boys perfectly.

Christmas Poinsettia

Every Tuesday for the last 18 months I have attend a local Sugarcraft course.  It is held at a local community centre (no it's very modern honest) and costs me a fraction of what a similar course held at a college would be.
I have learned how to handle various fondants and their properties but most importantly I am adding to my limited knowledge of making flowers and figures for my cakes.
So far I have made Flowerpaste Roses, Christmas Figures, Lilly's and Poinsettia and lots and lots of leaves !!!

For this terms project we are making a Christmas Cake with many elements to it, one of which is a Poinsettia and having googled to see if I can see a video or instructions on how to make this Christmas flower I realised that there isn't anything on the web remotely helpful.

So here is my (hopefully) helpful way to make a Poinsettia Topper for a cake

Equipment List :
Flower Paste
Christmas Red/Foliage Green/Egg Yellow Food Colouring Gels
22 Gauge white Wire
Small Rolling Pin
Ball Tool
Paint Brush
Edible Glue (You can make your own from Icing sugar and water)
Craft Knife
Trex
Poinsettia Cutters
Leaf Cutters (any will do I used Rose Leaf cutters)
Leaf/Flower Veiners
Edible Dusting Powders in Red and Green
White Florist Tape Stem Tape)
Cling Film
Scissors
Sponge

A Poinsettia is made from 2 different sized petals 3 small inner and 3 larger outer.  Which size you choose is up to you.

Take your Cutter and Veiner and Red Flower Paste, using a small amount of Trex to stop the paste sticking and drying out, make a small sausage from your flower paste.

Cut a 22 Gauge Wire into Quarters, take one piece and placing some glue on the end insert it into the 'sausage'.  Carefully roll out the paste from the sides of the wire and from the top of the wire.  Roll until the paste is very fine just keeping some bulk around the wire for support.

Take the Petal Cutter and cut out a petal and gently vein.  Placing the petal carefully on your sponge frill and thin the edges using your ball tool and leave to dry with some movement in the petal.

Repeat this procedure for each petal so you should have 3 small and 3 large.
Do the same for 3 leaves.
Leave all petals and leaves to dry in a dry place, over a radiator works at drying them if you need them quickly.  Handle them very carefully as flowerpaste is very delicate and quite brittle when it's dried.

Next you need 6 stamens (centre of the flower)
Cut 2x 22 gauge wire into 6 pieces and taking the yellow flowerpaste roll a small ball and attahc to the wire with glue.  work the ball down the wire gently so that it is well attached and creates a small cotton bud like shape- repeat 6 times and leave to dry.

Once all your parts are dry dust them with the appropriate colour dusting powder to create a depth of colour and realism that the flowerpaste alone cannot achieve, my tips for the rose leaves is to dust the edges with a burgundy colour to add a little something.
Use a soft but big brush for this but be careful as a little dust goes a long way, I find a make up brush works for me I found some in Primark in the summer that do the job perfectly.

Next comes assembling your Poinsettia.

Cutting your Stem Tape into 1/2 width fasten the 6 stamens together with one in the centre and the other 5 going around it. Then attach the smaller petals in a triangle around the stamens, attach each petal one at a time making sure each is secure before you add the next, once your smaller petals are aligned and in place attach the larger petals on the outside in the gaps between the small petals. Then attach each leaf for a beautiful single Poinsettia Cake topper.

This will be going on a cake once it is covered so I shall show you a picture of it in place shortly.

Please feel free to ask any questions and show me your end result if you give it a go.
